Problems with VideoCDs Summary: Resolution: Also, for Windows 95 users make sure you have Microsoft's CDFS update file "iosupd.exe" installed. This is an executable program that updates the Virtual Device Driver on your system. It is available at: ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/Softlib/MSLFILES/iosupd.exe. Another issue is if the CD-ROM controller is an IDE device on an INTEL Motherboard running busmastering. The busmastering software could be an update patch supplied by Intel for the Triton chipset motherboards. It could also be built into an Intel PentiumPro 200 motherboard which will not operate in a non-busmastering mode. In either case, CDFS will not read VideoCD titles when busmastering is present. As of March 1997, Intel has released a busmastering driver patch for both Win95 and WinNT. The drivers work with the FX, HX, VX chipset -Intel Triton. Win95 driver -ver 2.85,WinNT driver -ver 1.68 Available from: http://www.bmdrivers.com/ With this patched driver installed on the above mentioned Intel Triton motherboards, it is now possible to run busmastering and play VideoCD with the Xing MPEG player. Unfortunately, this does not apply to the Pentium Pro and P200 systems in which busmastering is part of the system bios. It is hoped that the Triton patch from Intel is an indication that they are aware of the conflicts that they are creating with Win95 and WinNT's CDFS and that this patch will become part of the system bios on the P200 systems. Any word on the implementation of this compatibility on P200 systems from our users would be welcomed. Another possible solution for the busmastered PCI IDE controller would be to connect your IDE CD-ROM drive to the sound card's interface. The interface on a sound card is usually not busmastered, but at the same time is more than fast enough for a CD-ROM drive. |
| Problem | Cause | Usually Solution |
| "Color-Rain" when viewing the VCD | Lack of memory or memory allocation | Restart the computer |
| "Error Message" | Missing the Mpeg Driver for VCD | Install Xing Mpeg Player, it automatic install the vcd Mpeg driver also. |
| VCD won't autoplay. | VCD is not autoplay. | Open the *.dat file in mpegav folder manually with compatible Mpeg player (Note: not all mpeg player support VCD format.) On VCD 2.0 and up, you can select open VCD under "File" on Xing. |
| VCD won't run. Put the CD inside the driver and nothing happens. I try running the .dat file and the whole computer hangs. | Not sure. However it's probably the video drivers. | Solution from one customer: I format the computer and installed everything found in the video driver CD ( did not do this last time) and it worked. There is nothing wrong with thehardware. |
| The computer hangs up when it reach the same point everytime. | Dirty or oil on the VCD (Scratch can cause this problem too.) | Clean it, and play it again. Usually this situation happened most on the brand name CD Rom Drive (guess they are more sensitive. When I use the $40 32x CD Rom drive. It reads everything.) |
| The CD Rom drive cannot regonize the disc. Can't even see the file in Windows Explorer. Seems like nothing in the CD Rom Drive. | Many Causes | Put it into a regular CD Player, and have it spin for about 30 sec, then put it back into the computer and see what happen. Also, try to run it on other computer if possible. Same thing, this only happen to brand name CD Rom Drive, A cheap one doesn't have this problem. |
